The trainer in the blended era. Searching for the “Magic Mix”

Blended learningis one of the most popular trends in the world of training, indeed it is more than a trend, it has become a starting point, an implicit prerequisite that pervades our work as designers, which underlies the requests that we receive from our internal customers. The reason is simple: the blended approach allows you to synergistically combine the many classroom and distance learning methods, thereby multiplying training opportunities, providing every learner with the tools best suited to their style and learning needs, reducing distances and, no least important, keeping costs down. Chefs, chemists, directors, skilled architects, imaginative inventors. That is how we sometimes feel when we are grappling with the creation of blended paths. Like chefs… because it’s not just about mixing different ingredients, you need to know how to choose and measure them skilfully, just as with different methods. Like chemists… because it is crucial for each path to trigger a reaction, to create a change. Like directors… because it requires great ability in managing and organising all the actors involved in the process. Like skilled architects… because it is necessary to know how to design cities of learning that place the citizen/learner at the centre, that provide places in which to meet and exchange views to create a social learning dimension, that are ecological and involve the capitalisation and valorisation of existing training material. Like imaginative inventors… because a change of vision is required, a proactive approach to innovation without rigid and predefined rules, and whose reference theoretical models must always be adjusted to the context and the characteristics of the target. Whatever the profession we feel closest to, or the metaphor we prefer to adopt, the goal is always the same: to achieve the magic mix that represents the “perfect” path
